There are programs offered in or near Mounds which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will instead no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do offer a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary services, and it is encouraged.
