Smoking Allowed in Designated Area - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Deer Island, OR.

It is estimated that approximately 75% of clients at residential rehab programs for drug addiction and alcoholism are smokers. While it is true that nicotine is addicting and people in any sort of treatment for addiction should endeavor to be abstinent from all addictive substances, this can present problems that make enforcing a smoking ban outweigh the benefits of this restriction. A person who is addicted to a substance that could very well kill them immediately might not go to treatment if they must quit smoking cigarettes, so therefore, many facilities in Deer Island allow smoking with certain restrictions, limitations and in designated areas of their facility.

Some rehab centers allow clients to smoke anywhere, as long as it is outside for instance. Some rehab centers have a designated smoking area, which is the only area that clients can smoke. Due to the fact that nicotine is addictive, even rehab facilities that have a designated area and allow smoking commonly provide alternatives to smoking if the client wants to quit, such as nicotine patches, nicotine gum and prescriptions. There are also programs that allow smoking in designated areas, but educate clients on the health risks associated with smoking by incorporating this into their program either by way of direct education or by providing educational literature for clients to consider. In facilities which allow smoking in designated areas this is sometimes only approved for clients, whereas staff are sometimes restricted from smoking at the center or are asked to not smoke in front of clients.

Publicly funded substance abuse treatment facilities are bound by the rules and restrictions in regards to smoking that are imposed by state and federal agencies which oversee and administer these programs. Private rehab facilities have a bit more leeway and don't have as many rules and restrictions imposed on them, so may be more likely to provide designated areas for smoking.
