Young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 years old have access to addiction treatment programs built specifically for this age group. The most beneficial rehabilitation offered to young adults is at an inpatient rehabilitation program in Ontario which offers a wider spectrum of services than outpatient facilities. Substance abuse issues and co-occurring mental health disorders can be addressed at the same time in drug treatment programs for young adults which have psychologists or therapists on site to treat co-occurring disorders.
Young adults attending treatment programs which specifically treat their age group benefit from having the peer support available and the empathy of rehab staff who are usually skilled and knowledgeable at treating young adults.
The duration of treatment can vary in young adult treatment facilities, and this is usually dependent on the individual's progress throughout the program. The more serious the problem is, the longer it could be recommended that the young adult continues with the program. If outpatient therapy is the only recovery option available, this too should be intensive enough to meet the client's needs. For instance, there are outpatient programs for young adults which merely require the client to participate in therapy and counseling a couple of times per week, and there are programs which require daily attendance.
