American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require treatment for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely accepted a diversion option to receive rehab instead of jail time. So as one can see, there is an absolute need for a variety of service types to cover all of the various needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction rehabilitation services in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Talent face is access to comprehensive and effective services, particularly those who live in rural regions. Programs providing addiction treatment services in rural areas often are not capable of offering strategic planning intended for the needs of this unique demographic including substance abuse treatment services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native individuals can consult with stakeholders and elders involved in mental health services for their tribe or region to figure out which services are available to them and through which facilities, and which will best suit their needs. There have been numerous grants offered in recent years to help pay for these types of rehab services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effectively established treatment programs which provide evidence based treatment that also integrates culturally sensitive recovery services including those in their language which are provided by bi-lingual staff members.
