Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Beccaria, PA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Beccaria which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
