Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - East Berlin, PA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in East Berlin which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
