Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - New Eagle, PA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in New Eagle which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug-free life you want.
