Alcohol and drug abuse programs for Vets are crucial for the mental well-being and overall stability of Vets of all branches of the military. Because drug and alcohol abuse and other mental health problems are experienced at higher than average rates among Vets, it is crucial that Veterans get the assistance they need because of such high suicide rates also associated with these disorders with our Vets.
Alcohol and drug abuse facilities for Veterans in State College are available through the VA, with services that include efforts to handle associated problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, pain, disturbed sleep, irritability, and/or relationship problems which most commonly trigger addiction disorders among Veterans. Treatment for addiction and related disorders among Vets includes individual and group therapy and psychotherapies which can increase an individual's motivation to change. Involvement in outside support such as AA and other support groups is encouraged. Medications are also used in some instances to help Military Vets decrease their drug, alcohol and tobacco use.
Drug and alcohol abuse programs for Vets are offered during the weekend and evening hours, with both outpatient and residential options available. Programs which are Women-Only or Men-Only and those for homeless Military Veterans are available in certain areas.
