The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for efforts to promote the behavioral health of the U.S.. One of its obligations is the administering of opioid rehab programs, which are programs who provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Drug given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation facilities in West Kingston are programs who are legally allowed to distribute the medicines used in MAT as long as they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary services aside from medication like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid treatment center can get their basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation programs accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation facility is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every 3 years contingent upon the kind of accreditation it has been given.
