Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Cades, SC.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Cades that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
