There are addiction programs available in or near Mountain Rest that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will instead no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do offer a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
