Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - New Zion, SC.

There are recovery programs offered in or near New Zion which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will instead no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment goal is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
