Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Saluda, SC.

There are programs offered in or near Saluda that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will instead not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
