There are programs offered in or near Six Mile which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will ideally not become involved in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment objective is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do offer a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
