There are programs available in or near Spartanburg which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment objective is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do deliver a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and it is encouraged.
