There are programs offered in or near State Park which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will ideally not engage in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do provide a small amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
