Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Travelers Rest, SC.

There are substance abuse programs available in or near Travelers Rest which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will instead not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do offer a small amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary treatment, and it is encouraged.
