Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Union, SC.

There are addiction programs offered in or near Union which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will instead not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do offer a small amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary services, and it is recommended and encouraged.
