American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require treatment for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to receive treatment in lieu of jail time. So therefore, there is an absolute need for a variety of service types to provide services for all of the various needs of this client demographic, including substance abuse treatment programs in native languages.
