American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, meaning they have most likely accepted a diversion option to receive rehab in lieu of jail times for their charges. So as one can see, there is an absolute need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the very unique requirements of this client demographic, including substance abuse treatment services in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Carpenter face is access to effective rehab programs, especially those who live in rural regions. Programs providing substance abuse rehab services in rural areas may not be capable of offering support aimed at meeting the needs and demands of this unique group of people including substance abuse treatment services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can work with stakeholders and elders working in mental health services for their region or tribe to find out which services are available to them through which treatment facilities, and which ones will work best for their particular situation. There have been many grants sanctioned in recent years to help pay for these types of services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effectively established recovery programs which provide evidence based treatment that also encompasses culturally sensitive treatment services including those in their language which are performed by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
