American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require rehabilitation for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions arrive to treatment as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely accepted a diversion option to go to treatment in lieu of jail times for their charges. So therefore, there is definitely a need for a variety of service types to provide services for all of the various requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
One of the problems that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Nemo face is access to comprehensive treatment facilities, especially those who live in secluded locations. Programs providing addiction rehab services in rural regions often are not capable of offering support aimed at meeting the needs of this special group of people including addiction rehabilitation services in their language. There have been numerous grants approved in recent years to help pay for these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective programs which offer evidence based treatment that also encompasses culturally sensitive treatment services delivered in their language which are performed by bi-lingual staff members.
