There are substance abuse programs available in or near Allred which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will instead no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do offer a small amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary services, and it is encouraged.
