There are recovery programs offered in or near Brentwood that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will instead no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do offer a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary services, and this is encouraged.
