There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Elgin that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will ideally not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do offer a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is encouraged.
