There are substance abuse programs available in or near Gilt Edge that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will ideally not become involved in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and it is encouraged.
