There are addiction programs offered in or near Gruetli Laager which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do deliver a limited amount of counseling and therapy as secondary services, and it is recommended and encouraged.
