There are recovery programs available in or near Santa Fe that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do offer a small amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
