There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Sharps Chapel that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will instead no longer engage in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do offer a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
