Smoking Allowed in Designated Area - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Fort Hood, TX.

It is estimated that approximately 75% of clients at residential treatment programs for drug and alcohol addiction are smokers. While it is a fact that nicotine is addicting and people in rehab for addiction should strive to be abstinent from all addictive substances, this can introduce problems that make enforcing a non-smoking facility outweigh the benefits of this restriction. Someone who is addicted to a substance as life threatening as drugs and alcohol might not get help if they have to quit smoking cigarettes, so many programs in Fort Hood allow smoking with some restrictions, limitations and in designated areas.

Some facilities permit clients to smoke anywhere, so long as it is outside for instance. Some rehab centers have a designated smoking area, which is the only area that clients can smoke. Due to the fact that nicotine is addictive, even rehab programs that allow smoking commonly offer alternatives to smoking if the client would like to consider this as an option, such as nicotine patches, nicotine gum and prescriptions. There are also programs which permit smoking in designated areas, but educate clients on the health risks associated with smoking by incorporating this into their program either by way of direct one on one counseling or by providing educational literature for clients to consider. In rehab centers which allow smoking in designated areas this is sometimes only authorized for clients, whereas staff are sometimes banned from smoking at the center or are encouraged to not smoke in front of clients.

Publicly funded substance abuse treatment facilities are bound by the rules and restrictions in regards to smoking that are imposed by state and federal agencies which oversee and administer these programs. Private rehab facilities have a little more tolerance and don't have as many rules imposed on them, so may be more likely to provide designated areas for smoking.
