Crisis Intervention Team - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - May, TX.

A crisis event, such as a person struggling with the devastating effects of a mental health issue such as alcoholism or drug addiction, calls for an intervention directed by professionals who can make sure they accept the treatment they need before it's too late. A Crisis Intervention Team in May is a form of community monitoring which calls upon and activates healthcare, law enforcement and other relevant agencies as well as family members to assist addicts in crisis. This starts with the training and education of healthcare providers, law enforcement officers, and other relevant team members in the community so they know how to address the situation and work together during such a crisis. There are education programs offered to educate law enforcement officers and 911 emergency operators for example, which includes 40 hours of training in supporting the mental health professionals they will be working with during the crisis intervention, learning verbal de-escalation skills so that they can address and handle the crisis without it developing into a possibly dangerous or aggressive incident, etc.

In many cases, Crisis Intervention Teams also help by way of jail diversion. Meaning, being able to properly respond to the incident as a health crisis and not a crime helps keep individuals with mental health disorders out of jail and instead where they should be, in a hospital or treatment setting getting help. This also keeps people with mental health issues out of prison where they will not be able to appropriately handle their issue, such as a substance abuse disorder. Rather than in jail, those in crisis can receive counseling, behavioral therapies, medication and other mental health services to help them recover. This not only helps the individual in crisis, but also the entire community because it costs more to incarcerate someone with a mental health disorder in prison than it does to properly treat them in an appropriate mental health recovery program.
