The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for efforts to advance the behavioral health of the United States. One of its responsibilities is the oversight of opioid treatment programs, which are programs who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Drug given are drugs like methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Orange are programs that are legally permitted to give out the medicines used in MAT being they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive ancillary services in addition to medicine such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehabilitation facility can receive basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment facilities accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehab facility is approved to operate, it must be re-certified every year or every three years depending on the kind of certification that was given.
