There are programs offered in or near Annabella that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will instead not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment goal is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is encouraged.
