There are programs available in or near Aurora which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will instead not become involved in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do offer a small amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary services, and this is encouraged.
