There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Eden that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do deliver a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary treatment, and this is encouraged.
