There are programs offered in or near Escalante that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will ideally not become involved in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do deliver a small amount of counseling and therapy as secondary treatment, and it is encouraged.
