There are substance abuse programs available in or near Marriott Slaterville that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally no longer engage in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence.
