There are addiction programs offered in or near Vernon that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will ideally no longer engage in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to handle the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do offer a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
