There are substance abuse programs available in or near West Jordan which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will ideally not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as secondary treatment, and this is encouraged.
