Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally not engage in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms.
