There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Hamilton that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will ideally no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to handle the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and it is encouraged.
