There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Keyport that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will instead no longer engage in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
