There are programs available in or near SeaTac which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will instead not become involved in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment goal is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary services, and it is encouraged.
