There are substance abuse programs available in or near Seattle which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will instead not engage in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do offer a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
