The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. One of its obligations is the oversight of opioid treatment programs, which are centers which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Drug administered are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Shoreline are programs which are officially allowed to distribute the medicines used in MAT being they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary services in addition to medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid treatment facility can receive initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment programs accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehabilitation center is approved to operate, they need to get re-certified every year or every 3 years contingent upon the type of certification that was granted.
