Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Stockholm, WI.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Stockholm that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
