The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for efforts to promote the behavioral health of the United States. One of its responsibilities is the supervision of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are programs that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medications administered are drugs like methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Borderland are programs that are officially allowed to distribute the medicines used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive ancillary services in addition to medication like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehab program can get their initial certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab facilities accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment facility is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every 3 years contingent upon the type of certification that was granted.
