The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for efforts to promote the behavioral health of the United States. One of its duties is the administering of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are centers which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Medications prescribed are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Four States are programs that are officially allowed to dispense the medicines used in MAT being they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary services aside from medication like counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehab center can receive initial approval documentation while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab programs authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation facility is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the kind of certification that was given.
