The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of health efforts to promote the behavioral health of the United States. One of its responsibilities is the supervision of opioid rehab facilities, which are programs which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Medicine given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation centers in Panther are programs which are officially allowed to dispense the drugs used in MAT being they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary benefits in addition to medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid treatment center can receive initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid rehabilitation programs authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office.
