The armed forces currently uses a military insurance called Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families obtain health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard provides insurance benefits for retirees of the military who are 60 or older and their eligible family members. With Tricare Standard they receive services from any civilian health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay an annual deductible and coinsurance, as well as any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is an option available to Tricare Standard beneficiaries which provides access to civilian health care professionals within their provider network, with a reduced coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is available to all active-duty members, retirees, and all qualified family members, and with this they can select a primary doctor and obtain referrals to organizations that offer specialty care.
Through TRICARE, members of the military can receive substance abuse treatment services in Spencer. This includes individual and group therapy including family therapy, detoxification, and other rehab services. They will require pre-authorization for treatment and there will most likely be some limitations. Military insurance covers both outpatient and inpatient, but stays for detox are restricted to no more than 7 days. Partial hospitalization or impatient treatment following detoxification will only be authorized if it is an approved treatment center, and there are time limits as to how long military members are allowed to remain in rehab. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is typically allowed. In additional to this, there are 15 family therapy sessions and 60 group therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which are done on an outpatient basis. Family therapy is covered one after the active military member has completed other primary rehabilitation services such as outpatient or inpatient treatment.
