The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for health efforts to promote the mental health of the nation. One of its responsibilities is the administering of opioid treatment programs, which are centers which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medications prescribed are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehab programs in Washington are programs which are legally allowed to distribute the medications used in MAT as long as they remain certified and always maintain the necessary requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive auxiliary services aside from medicine such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehab facility can get their basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid rehabilitation programs authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehab facility is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every 3 years contingent upon the kind of certification that was given.
